born in Venezuela 50 years ago to join forces in the creation of educational services in disadvantaged areas. The bold vision of the founder, the Jesuit José María Vélaz-and collaboration of many people and organizations were able to crystallize a piece of rich history and future projection.
The March 5, 1955 opened the doors of the first Fe y Alegria school in a slum in western Caracas, thanks to the generosity of Abraham Reyes, a humble construction worker who gave his own housing to accommodate the children in the area. Thus begins the evolution of what is now the "International Movement for Integral Popular Education and Social Promotion Fe y Alegría"
The movement then spread to Ecuador (1964), Panama (1965), Peru (1966), Bolivia ( 1966), El Salvador (1969), Colombia (1971), Nicaragua (1974), Guatemala (1976), Brazil (1980), Dominican Republic (1990), Paraguay (1992), Argentina (1995), Honduras (2000), Chile (2004) and Haiti (2006). In 1985, Fe y Alegría is set in Spain as a platform to support Latin American countries and publicizing the work of the Movement in Europe since 1999, redefined its mission to take on new challenges in the field of development cooperation, with the name of Foundation Entreculturas-Fe y Alegría.

In search of answers to the urgent needs of students and communities, the proposed Fe y Alegría has resulted in various initiatives in different countries. In addition to school education in preschool, primary and secondary, has opened up space for other forms of action for human development, such as: radio stations, programs of adult education, job training and school rehabilitation, vocational training and higher-university, the promotion of cooperatives and micro-enterprises and development projects community health, indigenous culture, teacher training, publication of educational materials, among others.
In all these areas was serving with the communities, seeking to complement and support the activities of other entities, public and private.
The number of people reaching the Movement may well be by seven million a year.
